Results page

The search Results page enables you to work in several ways with the set of results generated by a search on FSTA Direct:

  1. Edit and re-run the search again without leaving the page
  2. Order, filter, and narrow the results set
  3. Navigate, print, export, select, and change the view of the records
  4. Combine and save searches using the My FSTA searches panel
  5. Link to full text resources, submit document requests, search the web, or prepare simple More like this searches

1. Edit and re-run the search again without leaving the page

At the top of the main search panel the search query is displayed with search term highlighting indicated, if set in Preferences. The search query is also shown in the editable box below, where the query can be modified and re-run by clicking on Search, if required.

If you wish to write a new search query, click on the appropriate search screen tab above this panel.

2. Order, filter, and narrow the results set

A number of manipulations can be done with the existing results set. Using the controls in the left and right side columns, you can:

  • Change the sort order – click on the 'Order your results' drop-down menu and select the order key (from most recent first, by author, or by source)
  • Narrow your search – click in the search box and enter some terms using the same syntax as Easy Search; click on Narrow and your search terms are added to the existing search as an All Fields search, thereby performing a search within the current results set.
  • Filter your results – click on the labels to
    • Keyword – show the 10 most frequent keywords in the results set; click on a keyword to see those records indexed with the keyword
    • Year – show the 10 most recent publication years of records in the results set; click on a year to see all records of that year
    • Source – show the 10 most frequent sources (including journal titles, patent sources) for records in the results set; click on a source title to see all records from that source
    • Document type – show the distribution of records by document type in the results set; click on a document type to show those records of that type
    • Author – show the 10 most frequent author names (including article authors, inventors, patent assignees, and corporate authors) in the results set; click on an author name to see all records by that author
  • Show only results from OA and free full text sources – click on the link at the bottom of the Filter your results panel to do this. For more on linking to free full text, see this article.

3. Navigate, print, export, select, and change the view of the records

The options here include

  • Navigation – at the top of the search page a series of numbers and chevrons facilitate moving between pages
  • Selection – records can be marked individually by checking the selection box to the left of the record’s accession number; it is also possible to select by page, or the entire results set by using options in the Select menu in the light blue menu bar
  • Print and export options are available from the menus in the light blue menu bar
  • Change the view of records between Title, Bibliographic, and Full by using the menu option (which affects all records on display) or individually by using the pop-out icon at the right end of the header for each record

5. Link to full text resources, submit document requests, search the web, or prepare simple More like this searches

At the end of each record a number of buttons are displayed that link to further record-specific functionality. Not all buttons are shown at the same time, and the display of some buttons is according to account settings (available to Local Administrators). The buttons are:

  • Web search: search Google, Google Scholar or Yahoo with words taken from the title of the source article
  • More like this: opens a new window from which a new search can be generated by selecting from authors, source, and keywords in the current record
  • Full text – link to the full text of a journal article using the article's DOI (digital object identifier). These articles are hosted at the publisher’s web site where access may be by subscription, pay per view, or free. If the journal operates some sort of Open Access or free policy we show a green or orange button (for more on this see here)
  • Open URL – links to your library’s automated access system and local holdings of journals; please note this button may be customised by your Local Administrator and may carry a locally different name
  • Full patent – links to the record at esp@cenet, where the full text of the patent may be available at no charge
  • Document delivery – request an estimate from IFIS for delivery of the source document
  • Library request – send an email to your local librarian requesting the source article
