Journal article full-text linking

FSTA Direct provides links  at the end of records on the search Results page to the full text of journal articles hosted at publishers' web sites. The availability of these links will depend on settings made to your account.

Linking is done via article digital object identifiers (DOIs). When an article's DOI is known, and the display of the link is enabled, one of two buttons is shown at the end of the FSTA record

A grey button links to the publisher's access point for the full text.  Often a subscription to the journal or a payment is required to download the full text. When you click on this link a window opens with links to view the source article clearly displayed on the publisher's web site:

A green button signifies that the source article may be available at no charge either in an Open Access (OA) journal, or in a journal that offers free access to articles after an embargo period has elapsed. Functionality is similar to that with the standard Full Text button, above.

The FSTA record will indicate the policy that the journal operates:

The OA field displays the journal's OA or free full text policy.

In addition an orange free full text button is sometimes shown

Some journals have an OA/free full text policy but do not yet use DOIs or we have not been able to locate them. The orange button generates a search on Google Scholar using the first author’s name and the title of the article. In many cases, especially with recent articles published on sites such as HighWire Press or Biomed Central, the results at Google Scholar will be limited to just one or two records and it should be easy to identify and link to the correct source article.

Please see Free full text links for more information.
