    AB  The design and construction of a relational database for functional foods is described. Functional foods are defined as foods used in the normal diet which have beneficial effects on health and reduce the risk of disease. The database contains data for 35 biologically active foods. Entries include biologically active compounds, classification, properties, foods, physiological effects, diseases, processes, legislation, bibliogaphy and functional classification. The classification tree was set up on the basis of descriptors from the FSTA thesaurus folllowing a bibliometric analysis. Data used in the database was extracted from 140 documents including articles and books.
